Yoga For The Terrified:

Good morning everyone out there (it may be evening for some of you... actually it may be evening by the time I finish this article)! I'm about to tell you a tale of a girl who used to do yoga, then got into a really bad accident, stopped yoga (and everything else), for two and a half years due to extreme pain, mobility issues and fear, when she met a yoga instructor who would change her life forever.

Well, that girl is me, and the yoga instructor is Erin. Some of you may know about the accident and some may not, so I will quickly recap what happened and move on. I was riding my bicycle one morning on July 20th of 2009, when a driver in a van very suddenly and with force, opened his door. I was beside the van I didn't see what hit me (I didn't see a door open and then run into it- the door hit me from the side). All I knew was that I was thrown from my bike into traffic, and that I was in the worst pain of my life, which would last for a very long time.

My upper left arm was snapped in half and sticking out in an unnatural way just under my skin,  my right knee was torn (meniscus), my hip was out and my back neck were too. Luckily the traffic stopped before hitting me, and it turned out
that an Emergency Services Vehicle was directly behind, so they were on me in a few seconds!

I was taken away in an ambulance, and it goes from there with physiotherapy for over two years, tons of specialists, doctors, a cane, knee surgery and a psychotherapist to help me get over the trauma. I stopped everything. I became a hermit, not wanting to leave the house, and life became a little miserable for me. My readers may not have known how bad it was because I tried my best to remain positive for the blog and continue on the message of encouragement for those making the effort to live a Vegan or Vegetarian lifestyle. And sometimes when you pretend to feel good, you can actually have that sense, and it lifts you up. So thank you so much to all of you for pushing me in that direction.

My great friend Azy (on the left here), went through all of this with me, and a few weeks ago she said something to me that never left my mind, and triggered a profound change in my feelings about what I could and could not do. She said to me that "our bodies are powerful machines that can do anything we decide to".  And it was that simple. It changed my perception of the problems I was having. I had made up this story in my head that I could no longer do the things I loved, and that I would just have to live with the pain and let it take control of me. This may seem like a "Well, duh" moment to a lot of you, but it really struck me that I was wallowing in the accident and reliving it every day instead of realizing that it was just something that happened.

Now let's talk about Erin. Erin is a remarkable human being who came into my life at just the right time. She is a vibrant spirit who has a great sense of humour and compassion for anyone she comes into contact with. AND she teaches yoga. I agreed to go to a yoga class she was teaching at a beautiful and inviting little studio called Flow!  here in Toronto, because she was just starting out there and I wanted to show my support. I decided that I would be at the back of the class so I wouldn't be as embarrassed, but I was still terrified that I would look like an idiot because I hadn't done any yoga since before the accident. I had to make myself go, when the time came, and I just wanted to get it over with (if I can be honest here).

But Erin's class was life-changing for me. It turned out to be the most soul-nourishing, embracing, non-threatening and lovely yoga class I had ever taken! It was what yoga should be (to me). I felt fantastic afterward, and I can't thank her enough. AND... I have done yoga every single day at home since then, along with taking a class from Erin once a week! I am in love with life again! It has changed everything, and I am so so grateful.

So thank you thank you thank you to my friends who have stood by me. EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY (at least when I achieve my goal of convincing everyone to go Vegan, and treat animals, people and the planet with all the love they have!!)!

XOXO
Lyn
Ps. If you would like to join us on Wednesday evenings at 7pm for yoga at Flow! just send Erin a quick message to register a little in advance :)

The Truth About The Sheep Industry (Wool/Meat/Skin/Milk):

Hello there beauties!  Erin here.
I thought I would tell you about an experience I had while shopping with my partner yesterday. You may or may not agree with my methodology, but I think anyone who is trying to live a conscious life has choices to make in how they spread their message, so here is what happened: We were out looking for winter jackets that did not contain wool or leather, and trying to avoid making him look like a giant neon marshmallow at the same time. Then I had an interesting, and all too common, thing happen to me- a thing that to this day I debate in my head.

After looking through several coats that were all made of at least some wool, the salesman finally asked me "So, does your partner have an allergy to wool?". "No", I said "We're Vegan". And the man continued on looking through coats for about a minute, but then stopped, turned to me, and said "But it's just like cutting hair. right? It doesn't hurt them...".
I raised my eyebrow and thought the thing I always think: "Do I bother getting into this? Is there a chance at enlightening said individual?". The answer in this case was no. I thought the fact he had clearly thought about my remark was intriguing though, so I gave him a small bit: "No, not really". He then asked, "So are they rough with them or something?" and I answered "Yes, *smile*, something like that". He looked suspicious so I said "Just trust me. You should go look it up on-line when you get home". He took a breath and appeared to consider it. And that was that.
It's so hard to know what battles to fight sometimes, and how to go about doing it without starting a war of who's wrong and who's right.  It drains a lot of energy, and can be quite negative and upsetting to go head-to-head with someone who disagrees with you. People have different forms of activism that are all valid in my book. Some are very in-your-face-I'll tell you how it is, and some are quiet-be-like-me types, and some use positive-affirmation to promote Veganism.
The secrets of the wool industry are relatively new

to me, if I can be honest, and I have been living
a more compassionate lifestyle for a number of years now, so no wonder there are others who are in the dark on the subject. This being said, I realize that reactions and answers that are filled with loathing, bitterness and contempt are often just met with people defensively saying "Those crazy Vegans- What a bunch of loons". In this case though, I feel like I gave the man just enough to make him wonder if he was missing something. I hope he went home and did a google search, despite me assuming that perhaps he was a lost cause.

"Just trust me", I said. Perhaps my entire conversation with him wasn't the most eloquent, enlightening or informative of discussions, but it did make me realize something important. In this struggle I've had of whether I "get into it" or not, it suddenly dawned on me that if I can make someone trust me, or even trust that I truly believe something, people will want to know the truth. They will believe that maybe there is something they should know, and I think that is a magnificent start. Just food for thought guys. I am not including the really horrific images of factory-farmed sheep because it makes me sick, but if you would like further information on that topic, visit this link: Sheep are kept for their wool, skin, meat and milk...

Here is a video from Pink! standing up for sheep and telling us the truth behind the industry: Interesting that it is age restricted 18+ because farmers don't want you to see how bad it really is.
(This is a really graphic video, just warning you).
I only watched this once:

You can find many other articles on the internet under a factory-farmed sheep search. Thanks for being who you are, and caring enough to look into this.

Much metta (loving kindness)

V-Log # 79,084... Vegan Cheese Review!

Well, in this V-Log Erin and I review Daiya Cheese and Tofutti Cream Cheese- The only two Vegan Cheeses we think are worthy of being mentioned, because in our opinion, companies that make Vegan cheese need to work a lot harder to develop their products... The market is wide open, at the time of this writing, for Vegan Cheeses, so get on it! It's the main reason people say they could never go Vegan, so we fully support any efforts made in this direction.
If you have any suggestions for Vegan Cheeses you've tried and loved, let us know and we will do a review, but remember that we are brutally honest ;)

Oh, and the other great thing about Daiya Cheese is that you can store it in your freezer, so this cheese will never go bad (note to restaurants)!

XOXO

V-Log #6? Vegan Chips Review...

Hello my lovelies! Here is our 6th V-Log (I think), where Erin and I do a Vegan Chip Review. There are, of course, many different kinds that aren't represented here, but below are the ones we chose. All I can say is that... we will get better with practice.

We have a bunch more lined up for you, so stay tuned!

Mother Nature's Raw Chips!:

Article I Wrote to NOW Magazine About Their MEAT ISSUE:

Hey guys, Lyn Rose here from Beautiufl-Vegan.com in Toronto.

I adore NOW Magazine, but I thought I would comment on your Meat Issue... First of all, I like that you presented meat on the cover as it is, and not glammed-up on a plate, but as a slab of something that was a living, breathing animal. I'm not a Vegan who can't sit at a table with someone who's eating the meat dish of their choosing, because we all decide what goes into our bodies, but I am having qualms about an extremely popular publication shining the limelight on the subject in such a positive way.

I did appreciate Adria's article, and think she did a good job at clarifying the meanings of different labeling on meat packages, but the term "Ethical Carnivore" is a modern myth. There is nothing ethical about meat eating, because no matter how the animal is raised, it is always slaughtered to feed our addictions in the end.

I do realize that it is, to some small degree, more compassionate to support local farmers who might give their animals a less terrifying, disgusting life before they meet their maker.  The reality is that most meat produced for consumption here in Canada and abroad, that is widely available in grocery stores, comes directly from a hell that is Factory Farming. Where's that article?

Most folks don't shop at farmer's markets. They are lead by their tongues to whatever tastes good. And your Bacon Nation glorification article stating that bacon cupcakes were "enough to turn hardcore Vegans into born-again carnivores" is utterly ridiculous. Living a Vegan lifestyle is an ethical and health choice that has nothing to do with obsessions over flavours that we can easily reproduce without the dead animals getting involved. I also noticed that the article on raising backyard city meat didn't include the other option of considering going Vegetarian or Vegan, although I think it might lead to that if people had to look their meal in the eyes.

I look forward to the Vegan Issue of NOW Magazine :)

UNGRIP- Watch Full Documentary!

UNGRIP is a MUST SEE documentary. It's about our rights as humans, living off the grid, a revolution of consciousness. There are things we may or may not resonate with in this film, but it's a powerful eye-opening message.

If A Tree Falls (Documentary about the Earth Liberation Front): Move Your Money:

To watch the full movie, go to this link:
I just watched this film called If A Tree Falls (trailer above), about the Earth Liberation Front (E.L.F.), and I am torn on the subject. The E.L.F. are labeled terrorists, as are the Animal Liberation Front, but as we know, things are not so black and white. There comes a point, as stated in the movie, when you are screaming for justice at the top of your lungs and no one is changing anything, that you start to think about what actions you could take to make those changes happen.

I am as frustrated as all of the people who demand a better life for EVERYONE on this planet, including humans, animals and the planet Earth herself. There are a lot of days when I think that things are pretty unlikely to improve, but I have to stay positive and live my own life the way I want others to.

This movie brought out a lot of anger in me, about how invested the police and governments are in maintaining the corporate stability, and old ways of doing things. I generally try to keep a light tone on Beautiful-Vegan, and that will not change, but I would like to invite all of you who come here and communicate with me and the Beautiful-Vegan Crew, to do something radical and simple that will be felt by the old-school corporate world: Take your money out of your corporate banks, close your accounts and open up a Credit Union Account. Thousands of people around the world are doing this as we speak, and it's really shaking things up.

 Credit Union Definition (Wikipedia):
"A credit union is a cooperative financial institution that is owned and controlled by its members and operated for the purpose of promoting thrift, providing credit at competitive rates, and providing other financial services to its members.[1][2][3] Many credit unions exist to further community development[4] or sustainable international development on a local level,[5] and could be considered community development financial institutions."

Yesterday Bank-Transfer Day began, and  for those who haven't done it yet I will say that it's a very empowering thing to do.

I will still go to protests, but I realize that things only change when life becomes uncomfortable for governments and corporations, and foundations begin to fall. So as I have said before, we vote with our dollars every single time we buy something. Let's make a declaration to BE VIGILANT!

Making The Connection: An Awesome Documentary About Switching to a Vegan Diet!

I loved this documentary! It was so well done, and very inspirational. Making The Connection is modern and brilliantly put together. It makes me feel even more proud of my decision to go Vegan so many years ago.

Please watch it and share!

V-Log #3: Vegan Chocolate Challenge!

Ok, this video finally went up! We had some technical difficulties, but we're ready to go, with many more to follow (if you're not too annoyed with us already).
So in this episode of the V-Log, we compared a bunch of different vegan chocolate bar options... not something we usually eat, but we're happy there are options out there because it will ultimately bring more people to the Vegan lifestyle, and that's what counts!

Here are a list of the Vegan chocolate bars we reviewed:

Jokerz Chocolate Bar (similar to a Snickers Bar):
Soy Chocolate by Rene Ray (Plain milk chocolate bar):
Mahalo Bar (Chocolate covered coconut and almond bar):

Coconut Bar Original by Oskri:

Sjaaks Peanut Butter Cups:

Justin's Organic Peanut Butter Cups:

Cleo's Peanut Butter Cups (Similar to, but way better than, Reces Peanut Butter Cups)
So, watch the video before purchasing any of these products, because we are very honest in the V-Log review, and seriously did not like all of them. Thanks for watching!
xoxo
