7 Edible Plants You Can Grow Inside!

1. Sprouts: Probably the simplest thing to grow inside, and full of nutrients, are sprouts of various plants such as alfalfa,  bean sprouts, sunflower sprouts, red clover, broccoli and many more. They do not need much light at all (in fact they do better in low light). Get a jar, add the seeds to cover the bottom, soak in water over night, drain water using either cheesecloth or nylon staling over the jar, and rinse them twice a day until sprouts begin to grow (around 5 days or so)! We grow sprouts all the time. Make sure you use sprouting seeds especially designed for that purpose, as many times you will find that they have been radiated and therefore will not grow.

2. Lettuce: Different types of Lettuce can be grown in containers inside, provided windows are south facing and let in lots of light. The soil should be moist, fertile and well-drained.

3. Orange Trees: Many varieties of miniature orange and citrus trees can be purchased to grow fruit all year long. They look so fantastic and cheer up a room to boot! My mum used to grow them when we were little and I remember thinking it was so cool.

4. Herbs: Herbs such as Basil, Mint, Rosemary, Dill, Parsley, Cilantro, and Chives are simple to grow indoors. Grow in well-drained pots in windows that get as much sun as possible. Soil should be fertile and light. Don't water them too much, especially in winter months (as the temperature gets cooler in windows that are drafty, they need much less watering, but don't let them completely dry out either).

5. Tomatoes: Tomatoes, especially different varieties of cherry tomatoes grow well indoors provided you have south-facing windows that do not have a draft during the winter months. The soil must stay moist, as dry soil stresses the plants and they will not produce fruit in stressful conditions. Tomato plants need to be well-supported as they grow, and in order for them to flourish, pluck off the extra shoots that begin to grow between the main branches. This will allow the plants to focus on fruit growing instead of more greenery. Tomato plants need to be sprayed with a pollinating spray for fruit production while growing indoors because you probably won't have bees... but it's cheap and you can buy non-toxic varieties.
As with most of the plants I am mentioning, they can be set out on a balcony or patio
in the summer, to strengthen and air them out.

6. Peppers: Red, green, yellow, orange, hot or sweet peppers can be grown inside with great success. You must have them in south-facing windows that do not have a draft during the winter months, like the tomatoes. They like average to fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The soil must stay moist, as dry soil stresses the plants and they will not produce fruit in stressful conditions. Chili Peppers need hotter windows than sweet peppers to grow fruit, so keep that in mind. They will be small peppers, but satisfying none the less :)

7. Green-beans: Grow very well in sunny windows with average to fertile, humus rich soil that is moist but well-drained. They also need good support as they grow quickly, and need to hold onto small trellises for stability.

House plants are remarkable. They not only lend beauty to our spaces, but improve our air quality, make us feel at ease, and can even be a source of healing and food.
For useful advice and tips on growing houseplants go to this University of Illinois Houseplants Website.

Many of my plants (and I have a crazy jungle in here), are rescued souls from people who have left them on the side of the road or even in the garbage bin at work (I have a 6 year-old Poinsettia, which was thrown out by a co-worker because she assumed they were only seasonal).

You can also go to garden centres and greenhouses to buy lovely indoor trees, plants and seeds, or even  buy plants on-line from various websites.

Yay for plants! Grow Grow Grow!

Puppy Mills, Private Breeders and Animal Shelters:

Hello my lovelies! I've been wanting to write a little on the topic of puppy mills for a while now, to open up some understanding for those who don't know. A puppy mill is a dog breeding facility that values profit over the welfare of the animals. They breed large quantities of the puppies and keep them in crowded cages that are not well maintained. The term puppy mill can be used to identify other animal breeding operations that produce large quantities of animals for use as pets or as feed.

I'm showing you this image (above), but leaving out some photos I have seen that were simply too disturbing to post, but just know that it is inhumane to say the least. Puppies are often weaned from their mothers far too early for normal socialization and health, and they are packed in crates for long journeys until they reach the pet shops, which many will not live to see.

Roughly 3,500 to 3,700 pet shops in the United States buy their dogs from these puppy mills, and the public has no idea. These shops sell up to 300,000 to 500,000 puppies a year. Because of the way in which the puppies are raised, they often develop sicknesses that will cause discomfort and death, and raise your veterinarian bills through the roof.

So it is in everyone's best interest to deal with reputable breeders who treat the animals with care and compassion. They will insure that dogs are not bred indiscriminately and their lineages are preserved and well matched if you are looking for purebreds. If you are searching for the cutest little companions, and you live near my city, Toronto Maltese Puppies might be a good place to start. The owner is lovely, and takes very good care of these little babies.

The other option is going to animal shelters and adopting pets that have been abandoned or abused. Not knowing the background of an animal is sometimes tricky, but they are eternally grateful for your friendship and kindness. Whatever you decide to do, please be loving, and remember that what we put out into this world comes back to us :)

xoxo

Meet The Incredible John Lewis! Raw Vegan Fitness Trainer and so Much More:

As a Nationally Certified Fitness Trainer, John Lewis has been in the health and fitness industry for over 9 yrs exercising his passion for nutrition and fitness. Throughout his college years, he was a basketball player.

In addition to the extensive knowledge in body sculpting and contouring, what makes John one of the top national fitness trainers is his creative ability to understand and live a “vegetarian/vegan lifestyle” while maintaining a physique that is commendable.  In essence, he is able to cater to a diverse group of individuals and is a master-mind in creating and developing unique and healthy nutrition plans.

It is not surprising that given his unique abilities he has attracted clients from various industries including actors, models, and business professionals of all ages. John strives to educate his clients on living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and he takes great pride in transforming individuals physically, mentally and spiritually. After all, it is said, that 60% of one’s success is based on how one feels about themselves.

John has appeared in multiple fitness magazines such as Muscle & Fitness, Mens Fitness, Fitness Rx, Exercise for Men, Planet Muscle, etc. as well as Maxim and Sports Illustrated.  You can also see him featured in the P90X Television ads.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1977, John grew up in St. Louis, MO.   At a young age, he excelled in football and basketball.  He continued his streak of athletic excellence throughout his high school and college years in Mc Cluer Senior High and Harris-Stowe State College respectively.  Graduating with a Bachelors degree in marketing, he later went on to pursue his MBA from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

John’s education in business coupled with his love for health and fitness gave him the ability to start his venture – Bad Ass Vegan – a health and nutrition company that strives to educate individuals on plant based nutrition.  John’s love for his community brought forth the brainchild of “NObesity”, a foundation whose mission is to prevent obesity through education, physical activity and plant based nutrition.

Outside of health and fitness, John interests include reading, writing, brainstorming business ideas & most of all helping others fulfill a healthy life.
“I believe in fitness in its entirety.  The body is not the only thing that is important to great health, the individual has to be mentally prepared to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  I myself was an overweight child (315 pounds as a freshman in high school) who had to learn the ways of healthy living and making the right choices in regards to eating right. I believe that anyone who is in the fitness industry must have a firm grasp on the reality that not all people develop the same and that it takes different tactics to tie into the underlying reason of why a person is out of shape, or why the want to stay in shape.”

John Lewis (click here to visit his website) weighed 315 lbs. as a freshman in high school.  By senior year of college, this 6’5” man got down to 225 lbs and 7% body fat.
During graduate school, digestive problems led him to a doctor who urged giving up meat for 30 days.

After two weeks of avoiding meat,
Lewis had become completely regular and his stomach felt much better. He was torn between his love of meat and that he had healed himself by avoiding meat all together. Lewis chose vegetarianism, and four years later dropped dairy and eggs.

“I was so impressed at how well I felt, I wanted to share with the world  how being a vegan is not a bad thing and that we can be cool, healthy and dispel the myth that we just sit around all day and hug trees,” said Lewis.

Lewis says through his countless hours of research on what animal protein does to our “human” system, he has seen the effects of how changing to a plant -based diet has reversed various ailments and diseases. Now a raw vegan for over six months, he has no intentions of going back. He started NOBESITY, a non-profit organization assisting individuals with weight issues. The basis of the organization is holistic fitness through plant-based nutrition.

“I love seeing people develop the confidence to listen to their bodies and understand that nutrition is the key to optimum health. Since becoming raw I am able to train harder than ever and recover in half the time. I have a clear train of thought and my memory is great considering the million things that I am involved in on a daily basis. I am currently still educating myself about the human body and how nutrition is the key to a healthy life (not pills or magic potions),” he said.

Keep your eye out for this ambitious man who is working on a Master’s of Science in Health Education. He wants to develop educational programs to help people learn the skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A finalist in PETA’s “Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door” contest, Lewis is being sponsored by PETA for his “Tour De Fit,” in which he’ll perform at marathons and various events around the country.
